フランスの哲学者、作家、文学者、歴史家。1694年11月21日生まれ〜1778年5月30日（享年83）

啓蒙主義を代表する人物。哲学的には英国のジョン・ロックやニュートンからの影響を受け、フランシス・ベーコンついては、経験哲学の祖として賞賛した。
